Go Blues! That’s what French soccer fans chant when they’re cheering on their national team. It seems an appropriate title for this, since Americans generally treat politics like a sport. They pick their team (usually their Dads’ team). They know who their archrival is. And that’s that. No further discussion required.

(I bet just about any football fan could give you more details about the record of his (or her) team than he (or she) could about any of the presidential candidates’ voting records…)

There’s been record turnout for the blue team in the primaries so far, which gives me some hope. But do the Democrats have the attention span to bring it again in November? This is just pre-season, after all. The Big Game is still eight months away.

In the meantime, Dennis Kucinich has bowed out. I guess he doesn’t want to be a spoiler. I respect that, even though it kind of spoils my voting plans. He won’t endorse any of the other Dem candidates. I really respect that, given that none of them are anywhere near as liberal as he is (or as I am). They aren’t in his league.

We all know that unless something drastic happens, the blue team’s quarterback will be either Clinton or Obama. In 2006, eight organizations devoted to environment, children’s rights, civil rights, workers’ rights, reproductive rights and education (ADA, NARAL, NAACP, LCV, PTA, CDF, SEIU, and ACLU) gave senators a rating from 1-100, with 100 being most liberal and 1 being most conservative. Obama got a 98 and Hillary got a 95. I’d like to see the latest scores, but I imagine they’re about the same.

I hope blue fans fill the stadium on the big day. Maybe the polling places should have cheerleaders and people giving away schwag on game day… But that would be electioneering. Maybe just cheerleaders (male and female), in blue, of course. No logos or names. That would be more subtle. Subliminal, even. To hell with political correctness. What we need is political correction.
