What the world needs now is love, sweet love/It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of. All you need is love, doo do doo do doo. Love is a many splendoured thing. Make love not war. Love thy neighbor. God is love.
When cultures appear to embrace sentiments like those, one might be led to believe that there is hope for the human race. But how do we reconcile the apparent inclination to love each other, and our general sense that affection, tolerance and respect are possible and even desirable and maybe even The Answer with the way people on this planet really treat each other?
It seems that our pal J.C. had it all wrong. God is not love, after all. Obviously God hates love. In fact, it appears that God is hate.
That’s why religious freaks in India want to arrest Richard Gere for kissing an Indian actress in public at an awards show. Why the Islamic wackjob president of Iran is being accused of indecency for kissing the hand of his cute little old lady teacher in public. Why people who call themselves Christians can say things like this:
